There are some basic principles to follow, and until you nail down the basics, there's no need to go out and purchase fancy high priced tools and equipment. Below are a few topics to get you started. I recommend purchasing The Cyclist Training Bible,by Joel Friel.

Get fitted.
Whatever bike you ride, have it fitted by a professional. If you aren't comfortable, maximizing power and efficiency, you aren't going to have fun and your performance will suffer.

Training.
There are so many things to consider when putting together a training program. I'll start with a few things I learned along the way, some of which I wish I had been taught earlier.
