Clean up efforts are being done by the following team, clubs and individuals. Way to go!
The Tucson Tri girls made a day of it. Their project was to gather friends and club members and clean up one of their favorite routes (OLD SPANISH TRAIL) in Tucson AZ. Everyone received a 53x11 water bottle and some coffee. If you would like to join their efforts, please contact them. They are doing another project in the fall 08. Contact Susie here
Here's their report.
It was great to get out and make a difference. Another fun thing about
the clean up, was that many of the cyclists who rode by us--said Thank
you! We didn't go unnoticed! I would like to say a special thanks to
Susie for organizing this for us. And, another big thank you to
everyone who helped us clean up Old Spanish Trail Saturday! For a
short two hours this Saturday my family and I joined several fellow
TriGirls (and their moms, is this the brunch we planned?)to
pick up garbage along Old Spanish Trail in an effort to beautify one of
the places many of us frequent, either running or riding. The effort
was headed up by Susie D., joined by Bizzy, Nicole R., Kathy C., Polly,
and myself. Everyone gathered at 8:00 a.m. at the church at Old Spanish
Trail and Houghton (this is very close to my house, making the waking
up part easier), and collectively decided that we should move a bit
down the road, as there was more to pick up there. We started, then,
from Saguaro Nat'l Park East ("the Monument") and we each headed out
with trash bags and a central point to regroup. My family was able to
fill our trash bag within about a mile of the start point, and we had
bulky trash as well (wood pieces, broken signs). We had the kids
attempting to find ten pieces of trash for a reward (easily done- they
all earned lollipops); Susie's mom even had some instant karma- she
found $10 out there! Bagels, coffee and juice (for the younger
cleaners, who included my brood, Nicole's son, Bizzy's son, and
presumably Polly'spollywog) were provided by TTG and everyone came away
with a new 53X11coffee water bottle and free 53x11 coffee. This was a
very quick, easy community service and I'd like to see us as a group
try to make this kind of effort more often- it only takes a few of us
to make a difference (I know, cliché, but so true!). I know weekends
are usually long runs, long rides, or racing – but just a couple
hours here and there is worth it to know our club is doing its part to
keep Tucson beautiful. We as a club are a tremendous resource of
intelligent, strong-willed women; we owe some of our time to this
place that gives us so many sunny training and racing days and a
well-spring of areas for us to ride, run, and swim. I hope that our
next community service effort will be soon, and I hope to see waves of
purple out there!
